Cinnamon 2.0 vrijgegeven

Linux Mint drops LMDE KDE and Xfce

Going forward, LMDE ISOs will be released in two versions: MATE and Cinnamon. The decision was taken not to maintain a KDE version of LMDE and to stop maintaining the Xfce version. This was a painful decision to make considering the quality of LMDE Xfce and unofficial LMDE KDE, but one that made sense for Linux Mint since LMDE Xfce represented only 4% of the Linux Mint audience.

This is also consistent with our strategy to focus on what we do best, to do less and do it better and to invest less time in maintaining editions and more time in developing the core technology that they use. It was a tough call at the time when Linux Mint lost its Fluxbox and LXDE editions. They were great but they only appealed to a minority of our users and we can see the benefits of this decision now, we can release all our editions and switch to focusing entirely on the development of the next iteration much faster in our release cycle. Whether it’s Cinnamon, MDM, the Software Manager, the Mint tools, the LMDE live-installer or even new projects such as a Driver Manager or R&D plans related to the installation and/or base underneath Linux Mint, development is extremely important to us.

Blue Systems gaat Kubuntu sponsoren

Na Linux Mint en Netrunner wordt binnenkort ook Kubuntu gesponsord door Blue Systems

Kubuntu will have a new sponsor in Blue Systems from the 12.10 cycle starting in May. Kubuntu is a community led project to create a KDE flavour as part of Ubuntu. Our sponsor since it started has been Canonical who are now moving to focus on their Unity flavour. We would like to thank Canonical for this kind support and wish the best success for the Unity flavour (also called Ubuntu).

Blue Systems sponsors a number of KDE projects and will encourage Kubuntu to follow the same successful formula as it has always had – community led, KDE focused, Ubuntu flavour. Kubuntu rollouts include the world’s largest Linux desktop in Brazil. Kubuntu is one of the most successful communities within the Ubuntu project, home to a number of flavours. With the new Kubuntu Active flavour forthcoming as the first Ubuntu flavour designed for tablets there are many exciting possibilities for the project.

With this new sponsorship we will have the independence to give the project new wings and take the excellent KDE Software to new audiences..

April 10, 2012 By starbuck

As announced today, Blue Systems has become sponsor of Kubuntu:

Part of this sponsorship makes it possible for Jonathan Riddell to continue working fulltime with the community on building releases of the KDE distribution beyond 12.04.
The goal is to strenghten Kubuntus commitment to offer a KDE distro being part of the Debian/Ubuntu ecosystem, which also provides a solid foundation for other flavors like Netrunner and MintKDE.

Cinnamon 1.2 released

Cinnamon 1.2 is out!

All APIs and the desktop itself are now fully stable!

I hope you’ll enjoy the many new features, the desktop effect, desktop layouts, the new configuration tool, the applets, changes, bug fixes and improvements that went into this release. This is a huge step forward for Cinnamon.

We’ll follow up with documentation for artists and developers, and with a website for users to download, rate and comment themes, applets and extensions. For now, we hope you enjoy this new release as much as we enjoyed working on it. Some of the new features were requested by many people, others will come as a bit of a surprise. It’s a real pleasure for us to finally unveil the very latest of our favorite desktop and we look forward to receiving your feedback so we can improve Cinnamon further with each and every release.
